Palaeonemerteans with body wall musculature consisting of outer circular, middle longitudinal and inner circular layers, often with dorsal and/or ventral muscle fibre crosses passing between the two circular strata; cerebral ganglia and lateral nerve cords situated between epidermal basement membrane and body wall outer circular musculature; epidermal basement membrane usually thick; nervous system with neither neurochords nor neurochord cells; proboscis with outer circular and inner longitudinal muscle layers; blood vascular system without mid-dorsal vessel; intestine with shallow lateral diverticula; eyes absent; cerebral sensory organs consisting of simple ciliated canals in the cephalic epidermis; some species with lateral sensory organs in foregut region; sexes separate.
